Laboratory Tour & Capabilities
The Njoo Lab currently operates out of the Laboratory for Chemistry & Chemical Biology at the ASDRP main campus in Fremont, CA. We are a state-of-the-art modern organic synthesis laboratory fully capable of complex, multistep organic synthesis, characterization of complex small molecules, analytical and bio-analytical instrumentation, and chemical biology.

Students in the group also have access to the following software:
-
Schrodinger Small Molecule Discovery Suite
-
MestreNova for NMR, MS, HPLC, GC, and ElViS
-
Perkin Elmer ChemDraw
-
Prism Graph Pad
-
BioRender
-
Matlab
-
CAS SciFinder Database

Chemical Synthesis
Our laboratory is equipped with twelve (12) hoods for organic synthesis, each with a dual-manifold Schlenk line, compressed air / vacuum, and plenty of stir plates! The laboratory is also fitted with one hood specifically dedicated for photochemistry (housing our photoreactor) and another for ozonolysis (fitted with our ozone generator). Our hoods are spread across three laboratory bays in the ASDRP Chemistry & Chemical Biology laboratory (Bay 1 Discovery Chemistry, Bay 2 Discovery Chemistry, Bay 3 Process Chemistry). Our synthetic labs are fully equipped with dessicators, bench space, and ten (10) Buchi rotary evaporators (affectionately referred to as "rotavaps").
2
NMR Spectroscopy Laboratory
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the heart and soul of characterization in organic synthesis. In the ASDRP chemistry building core spectroscopy building, we are privileged to operate six benchtop NMR spectrometers from Nanalysis (3 x NMReady 60PRO QUAD) and Thermo (1 x PicoSpin 80 Series II, 2 x Picospin 45). Things we are capable of:
-
Standard 1H, 13C, 19F, 31P 1D NMR spectra
-
J-Resolved (JRES) spectroscopy for resolving overlapping resonances
-
Flow chemistry with in-line NMR
-
COSY, HSQC, HMBC, HETCOR 2D NMR for complex structural elucidation
-
T1/T2 or Hahn Echo for relaxometry experiments
3
Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS and LC-MS)
Together with the Yamamoto laboratory, the Njoo lab shares occupancy of the ASDRP Chemistry Building Core mass spectrometry facility, which includes nine mass spectrometers:
